The silly season is upon us and there are countless social events to celebrate the holiday season.
You can have your cake and eat it too, without gaining weight this holiday season by following these 3 simple rules:
Eat a healthy main meal
Before you indulge on the Christmas treats and desserts, eat a healthy main meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Make sure you are on track with your main meals, so that you can indulge a little with your snacks.
If you eat a healthy main meal, then you will be getting full on the healthier foods, than being hungry and indulging on higher caloric foods which don’t provide as much nutrient value.
You can still eat your Christmas food, but ensure that you fill up on a healthy meal first which will in turn, help you to eat less of the food that you don’t usually eat.
Larger Portions of Vegetables and Protein
Who doesn’t love mash potato, corn bread, rice and carbohydrates with their Christmas meal? I do – but to help you keep the weight off during the holiday season, focus more on having larger portions of protein such as turkey, ham, roast beef etc as well as vegetables, and then a smaller portion of carbohydrates.
If your plate was divided into sections, here is the ratio that you should look at:
– 1/8: Carbohydrates
– 1/8: Fats
– 1/4: Protein
– 1/2: Vegetables and Salad
Smaller Portions of Desserts
Christmas desserts are delicious but can also be high in calories. Instead of eating large slices of cake and pie, opt for a smaller piece.
If you are following the rule of “eating a healthy main meal” then by the time you get to dessert, you will not be as hungry so a smaller portion will be more satisfying.
Remember To Have Fun and Enjoy
The most important thing is to enjoy the holiday season with your friends and family. Enjoy the food’s you love in smaller portions but don’t restrict yourself to ‘no dessert’ because who wants to be sad during Christmas?
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
